VULCAIN

VULCAIN — “The Watch of Presidents”

Vulcain is a historic Swiss watch brand best known for its legendary mechanical alarm watch, the Cricket, which earned it the nickname “The Watch of Presidents.” Founded in 1858 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Vulcain built its reputation on technical innovation, precision watchmaking, and distinctive complications. The brand gained global recognition when several U.S. Presidents, including Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Richard Nixon, wore Vulcain Cricket watches. Over the decades, Vulcain has specialized in mechanical alarm timepieces, diving watches, and classic dress models that combine Swiss craftsmanship with functional design. Today, Vulcain continues to preserve its heritage while modernizing its collections for contemporary watch enthusiasts.

Founders – The Ditisheim Family

Vulcain was founded by the Ditisheim family, a well-known Swiss watchmaking family from La Chaux-de-Fonds. The family played a key role in establishing the brand and developing its early technical identity in the late 19th century. Their focus on precision engineering and innovation helped Vulcain become a respected name in Swiss horology. The most significant breakthrough under their leadership came with the development of the mechanical alarm watch, which would later define the brand’s global reputation.

Current CEO – Gerd-Rüdiger Lang (Revival Era Leadership)

In the modern era, Vulcain has undergone several ownership and leadership transitions. One of the most influential figures in its revival was Gerd-Rüdiger Lang, founder of Chronoswiss, who acquired and helped relaunch Vulcain in the early 2000s, restoring interest in the brand’s historic Cricket watches.

More recently, Vulcain has been managed by new independent ownership groups focused on reviving its heritage and expanding its modern collections. Because the company has changed hands multiple times in recent years, a single universally verified “current CEO” is not consistently listed in public horology records.
